What is a Penguin??
A penguin is a flightless bird, this means they can not fly. There are seventeen different species of penguin. Penguins are clumsy and waddle on land but they are superb swimmers.

Where are penguins found??
Penguins only live in the Southern Hemisphere. There are eight species that live in Antarctica and the other nine species live in Australia, New Zealand, South America, South Africa and small island near the equator.

What are the different species??
The penguins that are found in Antarctica are Adelie, Macaroni, Emperor, King, Gentoo, Royal, Rockhoppers and Chinstrap. The other ones that are not found in Antarctica are Jackass, Snares, Peruvian, Fjordland, Magellanic, Erect-crested, Galapagos, Yellow-eyed and Little Penguins also known as Fairy Penguins, Blue Penguins and Little Blue Penguins.

How to they keep warm??
Penguins have feathers that trap in all the warm air. When penguin shake their body their feathers move around letting some of the warm air escape.
Penguins have waterproof feathers which means when they go swimming they don’t get wet underneath their feathers, So they don’t get cold.

Breeding??
Normally penguins in Antarctica lay two eggs sometimes three. Emperor penguins only ever lay one egg. When one of the eggs hatches before their other, the other egg hatches to find their brother or sister much bigger than they are. The older penguin is more likely to be fed by parents.


Adelie Penguins??
Adelie penguins are small penguins that only live in Antarctica. They grow up to 70 cm and weigh up to 5 kgs.

Emperor Penguins??
Emperor penguins are the largest species of penguin. They grow over 1 metre and 15 cm in height and weight over 30 kgs.

Predators and Prey??
Penguins main predators are seals and birds. Penguins eat small fish and krill. Did you know because the penguins eat so much krill their poop goes pink. Penguins have white bellies and black backs to protect themselves from their predators.
